Dominican University Presents Social Activist Dolores Huerta

Dominican University will present United Farm Workers of America co-founder Dolores Huerta in a lecture on her life and work.

As one of the most famous and celebrated Latinas in the U.S., Huerta has played a major role in the American civil rights movement.

Dolores Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers of America with Cesar E. Chavez in 1962. As the main negotiator for UFW, she obtained many basic rights for farm workers including the provision of toilets in the fields along with soap, water and paper towels; cold drinking water; a medical plan that covered farm worker families; a pension fund; job security; seniority rights; rest periods; paid vacations and holidays; and protections from pesticides.

At the age of 78, Huerta continues to work for women, immigrants, workers and youth as the founder and president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation for Community Organizing. She also serves as a board member for the Feminist Majority and the People for the American Way. She has received several awards, including the Eleanor Roosevelt Humans Rights Award from President Clinton in 1998, Ms. Magazine's "One of the Three Most Important Women of 1997," Ladies Home Journal's 100 Most Important Woman of the 20th Century, the Puffin Foundation's Award for Creative Citizenship Labor Leader Award in 1984, Kern County's Woman of the Year from the California State legislature, and the Ohtli Award from the Mexican government.

U.S. EPA in Chicago Hispanic Heritage Month closing ceremony

There will be a panel discussion regarding: Environmental Health and Sustainability and their Impact on Children. The following panelists will be discussing this subject:
  • Mr. Frank Acevedo, Environmental Protection Specialist, EPA Region 5, Air and Radiation Division. Mr. Acevedo is an expert in diesel retrofits and its mechanism. He has been instrumental in the implementation of the EPA Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative.
  • Mr. Guillermo Gómez, Project Director of Partnership to Reduce Disparities in Asthma and Obesity, Healthy Schools Campaign. Mr. Gómez has extensive experience in non-for-profit advocacy organizations that focus in underserved minority communities, primarily in Chicago.
  • Mr. Vince Iturralde, Principal, Tarkington School of Excellence. This school was the first school in Chicago to be built under the guidelines for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Mr. Iturralde has a vast experience in education and environmental sustainability.
  • Ms. Kate Tomford, Senior Policy Advisor, Office of the Illinois Lt. Governor. Ms. Tomford was instrumental in the implementation of a new regulation for use of Green Cleaning in schools throughout Illinois.
  • Mr. Steve Vahl, Regional Environmental Officer, U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Mr. Vahl is an expert in lead-based paints and abatement in housing and is involved in community planning and development.
A cultural presentation will be featured by the Grupo Yubá.

Its programming focuses on strategic philanthropy, volunteerism, annual corporate social responsibility reporting, environmental communications and a variety of corporate and executive positioning activities including corporate awards, executive speaking engagements and officer nonprofit board placements.

This Corporate Relations Manager position reports directly to the Corporate Relations Director of Public Social Responsibility and will serve as a key member of the PSR Team in Allstate's corporate headquarters.

POSITION OBJECTIVES:
  • Leverage Chicago-area community investments to establish Allstate as a leading corporate citizen in the area and enhance Allstate's national PSR reputation.
  • Maximize Allstate's work with major partners to position the corporation as a visionary thought leader and a catalyst for innovative solutions to societal issues.
  • Create a positive community presence through robust support of and engagement with community partners.
  • Manage Allstate's corporate contributions process to maximize sponsorships and executive involvement in related events.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Qualifications
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
This position requires a minimum Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Political Science/Public Policy or business discipline from an accredited institution.

The successful candidate must be a highly skilled communications professional with 10+ years of experience that includes stakeholder relationship management, executive and corporate positioning, issues management, media relations, strategic planning and philanthropy.

The individual must have advanced strategic thinking/planning and leadership skills, including developing and maintaining constructive relationships with co-workers, all levels of leadership and internal and external business partners; using insightful judgment; driving innovation; and influencing others. In addition, the individual must have experience counseling senior-level executives regarding reputation matters.

Identifies targeted accounts and desired events for their assigned market segment within the short term booking window (less than 18 months) based primarily on financial benefit to the facility and ability to fit into available space. Works with CCTB Sales Team to develop, and implement marketing/sales plans for the retention of assigned McCormick Place events. Develops and implements sales strategies to secure new business for McCormick Place within their market segment in the short term booking window. Develops and implements strategies to increase overall MPEA revenue from assigned accounts, including pursuing possible co-locating events or in-conjunction meetings. Manages site visit process for McCormick Place visits prior to the official pre-event meeting. Establishes space assignment and pricing for all prospective events booked through their contact on the CCTB Sales Team and for all short-term bookings in their assigned market segment. Serves as the customer's initial McCormick Place contact. Guides customer from initial planning through the execution of a license agreement, then ensures a smooth transition to the final event planning and production services offered by Event Excellence and Focus One departments. Creates detailed bid proposals for prospective events at McCormick Place. Negotiates license agreements and financial terms in accordance with McCormick Place policies and pricing guidelines. Works with Senior Director in developing and administering annual budget for Department. Reviews scheduling of events in McCormick Place as a member of the Scheduling Committee and recommends booking priorities. Participates in the activities of various industry associations and meetings in order to establish and maintain contact with potential customers, and educate them on the advantages of hosting their events in McCormick Place. Participates in Sales, CCTB Scheduling, Pre-Show and Production meetings on a regular basis. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's Degree in Business and Public Administration, Computer Science, or other related field or related experience four (4) years. Must have strong verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal communications skills and the ability to clearly explain technical issues to non-technical/functional users. Must have strong customer service and teamwork skills. Must have the ability to coordinate and lead small groups of individuals engaged in project-related activities. Minimum of three (3) years of proven project management experience (emphasis on information technology projects is highly desirable), including evidence of having led complex, time-sensitive projects through all phases of the project life cycle to completion and delivery. Experience using Microsoft Project 2003 to develop Gantt charts and other project planning and tracking documentation. Minimum of two (2) years of business systems analysis experience, including experience defining functional and technical requirements (experience with financial systems and financial processes and procedures is highly desirable), as well as experience developing documentation (including requirements, technical analysis/design, testing, project and training documentation). In-depth knowledge and experience in application development methodology and the software development life cycle (SDLC), including software testing and software quality control and assurance standards and methodologies, is highly desirable. Knowledge and experience in any of the following is desirable: Entry-level programming (Microsoft Visual Basic.NET and/or Java), Database concepts and/or development (Microsoft Access 2003 and/or Microsoft SQL Server), Web design and development, including web portals and e-commerce, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Evidence of Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or other certifications is desirable, but not required.

DUTIES: Manages a variety of information technology projects involving the analysis, design, development, and/or implementation of software, databases, and web-based applications and websites in a timely, quality-focused manner. Develops and manages project plans, Gantt charts, issues and risks documents, and other related project-tracking and status documentation. Gathers and documents detailed requirements and analysis documentation in regards to the information technology needs of the MPEA user departments. Works with the Director of Business Systems in ensuring that all projects adhere to the established project management methodology. Applies best business practices to all work activities and deliverables. Performs all other duties as assigned.
